Don't Take the Boy

Matt shook he head "no momma." replied Matt before another big yawn

"Alright sweetie," she smiled, making sure he was tucked in comfortably. "You go back to sleep then, just yell for me if you need me."

Matt shut his eyes and soon was asleep, when he woke a hour later his chest hurt worse "momma" he yelled

Ruby was off the couch within seconds when she heard him call for her. "What is it baby?" she asked, walking over to the bed.

"my chest still hurts momma." answered Matt

She nodded and walked over to the guest bedroom. She grabbed a leather bag from the closet. She'd worked as a nurse for a few years before Matt came along, she still keep her work bag in the house, since Matt was never and easy one to get to the doctor. She sat the bag on the end of the bed. "Momma's gonna take a look at you baby," she said.

Matt nodded " ok momma." he sat still as his mother looked hom over

Ruby looked him over throughly, listening to his lungs carefully. She couldn't pick up on much because he was breathing too shallow. She didn't like it, but he was going to have to be in pain momentarily. "Mattie sweetheart," she said softly. "I know it hurts but I need you to try to take a deep breath for me."

Matt nodded and tried to take a deep breath, he groaned in pain it hurt too much

"That's it baby," Ruby soothed softly. "That was good Mattie, just rest now."

Matt nodded and layed down again it hurt so much to breath

"I'll be right back baby, I'm gonna go talk to your daddy," Ruby told him.

Matt just snugged under the blankets wishing the pain would go away

Ruby talked to Gilbert for a moment before he left to start the car. She slipped the thermometer in her pocket, figuring she'd check his temperature on the way. Keeping him wrapped up in the blankets against the cool air she picked him up. "C'mon Mattie, we're gonna take care care of you."

"where are we going momma?" asked Matt weezing slighty

"We're gonna get you taken care of honey," Ruby said, stroking Matt's hair as she left the room. She didn't want to directly say they were taking him to the hospital, he'd throw a fit.

Matt nodded and and weezed slightly again. he decided to close his eyes and try to sleep

Ruby sighed and rubbed his cheek, carrying him out to the car.

Matt snuggled closer to his mother, he was so cold

"It's okay Mattie," she said softly. "You're gonna be alright."

Matt chest hurt so bad all he could do was groan in pain

Ruby got into the car with Matt in her lap and shut the door. She knew Matt would realize it eventually, but she was glad it wasn't yet.

Matt laid still in his mothers arms finaily getting to sleep

Ruby smiled slightly at the sleeping child in her arms as they drove. She hoped this wasn't anything too serious.

Matt slept all thru the ride to the hospital
