Let Me Fall

Mike expalned what he seen of Jeff's illness to the doctor and she left, promising to return shortly. Mike ran and hand through his hair and went back to Jeff. "How's the paper work coming love?"

"Slowly," Jeff said, shaking his head as his vision began to blur a bit. "It'd be easier to do if the words wound stop moving so damn much."

Mike gently took the paper and pen from Jeff's hands. "Baby, i'll do it." And Mike went to work. "You Just try and feel better."

Jeff nodded and leaned his head back against the wall. "You're too good to me Mikey," Jeff murmured. "I don't see how you put up with a stubborn mess like me."

Before Mike could reply the doctor came back in, wanting to take Jeff in for testing, and when Mike put in to go with him she told him he wasn't allowed. Mike argued with her but she had him thrown out. So there Mike was, alone in the middle of a huge doctors office, with no way off getting back to Jeff.

A few room down from Mike, a group of doctors were trying to calm their three year old patient. The young girl had sustained a broken arm in a car accident with her mother, her mother unfortunately, did not survive. "No, no lemme go!" the child screamed. "Lemme go!!!!!"

Mike was wondering the hall ways when he was drawn to a certain room by the sound of a screaming child. Mike peeked into the room, his eyes landing on the small child. Mike cleared his throat, "May I ask what you guys are doing to this little girl?"

"We're trying to tend to the broken arm she suffered," one of the doctors replied. "but it seems little miss Delessio here wants no part of that."

"Ummmmm do you need help?" Mike eyes the little girl sympathetically.

"If you can calm her down in any way we'd be extremely grateful," the doctor said. The little girl shyly stared at Mike, tears rolling down her cheeks.

Mike knelt down so he was the same height of the little girl. Mike smiled at her and held out his hand. "Hey, Im Mike."

Hailey shyly took Mike's hand. "I Hailey," she sniffled, wiping her big blue eyes with her sleeve.

Mike grinned brightly. "Hailey, do you want me to stay here while they fix your arm up?"

Hailey nodded slowly. "Pwease, I no like bein' by myself," Hailey said.

"Kay." Mike picked Hailey up gently and sat her on his lap. "Comfy?"

Hailey snuggled close to Mike, feeling instantly safe with him. "Uh huh," Hailey gave a small smile.

"Good." Mike nodded to the doctors giving them the okay to start on Haileys arm again. "So Hailey." Mike tried distracting her. "How old are you?"

"Thwee," Hailey responded. She whimpered a bit as the doctors shifted her arm.

"Im 29, I'll be 30 this year." Mike rubbed Hailey's back gently.

Hailey nodded. "My Mammy is a widdle bit older than you," Hailey said.

"Oh yeah? how old is your mommy and where is she?" Mike questioned

"Mammy was 32, she went home to Jesus," Hailey said sadly. "I all alone now."

Mike felt his heart sink into his stomach. "Oh......who do you live with now Hailey?"

"Her mother was killed in a car accident a few minutes ago," the doctor said. "She'll be going into foster care."

Mike didn't like that at all. He felt a connection to this poor child. "So anyone can adopt her? What if bad people adopt her?"
